Athens-Clarke County Animal Services Department

About

The Athens-Clarke County Animal Services protects the public safety and health from at-large and dangerous animals and protects animals from inhumane treatment. Animal Services provides the following services for citizens:
  • Adoption or reclaiming of impounded and surrendered dogs, cats, and other domestic animals
  • Enforcement of the Athens-Clarke County Animal Services Ordinances
  • Information regarding lost or found pets
  • Investigations of allegations of animal cruelty
  • Public education on a variety of topics related to animals
  • Public safety from dangerous or seriously sick or injured animals and at-large dogs
Volunteers play an important role in day-to-day operations.

Availability

The Animal Services Adoption Center is open to the public from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM every day by appointment only and is closed on Government Holidays. Typically, volunteer hours are Monday to Saturday between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM, with the most help needed on weekdays. Availability varies depending on the volunteer position, and we are able to accommodate most schedules.

Commitment

Animals live in the moment, and each visit from a volunteer is meaningful! Any level of commitment is welcome and appreciated, however, we hope that you will be active in your volunteer service if you join our team. We are looking for volunteers that can spend time with our pets for at least a couple of shifts per month. Certain positions may require specific time commitments – please refer to the Current Volunteer Positions page for more information.

All new and returning volunteers must attend online orientation and in-person training before volunteering at ACCAS. Follow the steps below to complete the process:

1. Create a GivePulse account
2. Join the ACCAS GivePulse group
3. Register for the Online Orientation event
4. Watch the Orientation video and complete the related survey
5. We'll contact you to schedule in-person training!

Volunteering as a Group or for a Single Day of Service

If you have a group or are solely interested in a single day of service, please email Abbie Sawyer, Volunteer Coordinator, at abigail.sawyer@accgov.com to schedule an appointment. We have limited opportunities for individuals who wish to volunteer for a single day. Please send an email with the following information:

1. Date(s) and time(s) interested
2. Possible number in group
3. Name of group (if applicable)
4. Information for a contact person

Due to COVID-19, the Animal Services Adoption Center is not currently accommodating groups of more than 12 people. Because our Adoption Center is fairly small, we may not be able to accommodate your group all in one volunteer service day.
